The Whippet
The Whippet, also known as 'the poor man's Greyhound', was developed in the 19th century by miners in North England who couldn't afford to look after grey houses. They bred a smaller, more affordable version, which gave rise to the Whippets that we know today! They were either created through the breeding of smaller Greyhounds or by crossbreeding with Manchester Terriers.
Originally the Whippet was used for racing and rabbit hunting but now is more common as a cute and cuddly family pet. Whippets are friendly and gentle dogs that make excellent companions who love to be cuddled up inside. Their intense outdoor physical capabilities are balanced by their quiet and dignified nature at home.
Whippets are known for being delicate, patient, tolerant and very affectionate and are adaptable to new environments. If you don't like dogs who bark, the Whippet may be a great dog for you! They can tend to be anxious dogs and need loving and supportive owners that make them feel safe.
Did you know?
The Whippet has got better acceleration than Greyhounds and over short distances can beat them! They can reach speeds of up to 35mph. They have very little body fat and so much be kept ultra warm in winter with cute little coats. The Whippet is also known as very quiet, some people report their Whippets never even bark!

The Pomeranian
Pomeranians are a confident breed who originate from Germany. They were originally a whopping 13kgs (a far cry from today's toy-sized poms!) but were bred down to a smaller size in the region of Pomerania, which is German and Poland today.
Pomeranians are surprisingly descended from sledge-pulling dogs of the arctic with relations to the Keeshond, Norwegian Elkhound and the Samoyed. When they arrived in the UK with German-born Queen Charlotte they were white and much larger.
They became very popular thanks to the royals. Queen Victoria is responsible for breeding them to be much smaller. She brought a Pomeranian, called "Turi" back from Italy in 1888 who lay next to her at her death. Turi is responsible for the sharp increase in their popularity! Eventually, Pomeranians became the tiny size that we know them today and the larger breeds disappeared.
Pomeranians are known for being extroverted and intelligent with a vibrant spirit. They are loyal to their families and have a protective streak, making them great little watchdogs. Full of energy, these balls of fluff love to bond to one person. The definition of a lap dog, Pomeranians love to be picked up and cuddled!
Despite their enthusiasm for life and affectionate nature, they are quite tiny and fragile under all of that fur so need to be handled with care!
Did you know?
When Poms first arrived in the UK they were the supermodels of their time. The artist Gainsborough painted them several times which led to their popularity in the upper echelons of society. Mozart also had a Pomeranian and Michelangelo had a Pom by his side when he was painting the Sistine Chapel!
Another claim to fame is that two Pomeranians amazingly survived the sinking of the Titanic. The most recent buzz in the world of Pomeranians is the massive cult following of the Pom called Boo. He gained over 16 million Facebook followers when he died in 2019.

The German Shepherd
The German Shepherd is an iconic breed. They are the world's leading military, police and guard dog. They love to work and have many extreme skills and abilities. They were first bred in 1899 as herding dogs, where they were used to silently create an invisible fence to keep livestock where they were supposed to be!
The breed was formed from a variety of different sheep-herding dogs.German Shepherds are distinguished by their loyalty, bravery and trainability. They are loving, even tempered and love children, making them suitable family dogs for experienced owners who can give them all the exercise and stimulation they need to thrive.
This breed is regarded as a 'one-person dog' as they form a strong and affectionate bond with their handler and want to be with them all the time. When bred properly, they have incredible loyalty to their families.
A well-bred Germ Shepherd will be bold, confident, and intelligent yet always calm, steady and very obedient to its owner. They love to learn and they do truly love to be of service to us humans.
Did you know?
German Shepherds have had many jobs over the years, one of the lesser known jobs is as guide dogs for the blind. They were preferred as their height made them suitable for ex-military men who would have found Labs too short. They are still preferred for taller blind people.
The first canine film starred a German Shepherd known as Rin Tin Tin who was rescued as a puppy in 1918 from a battlefield in WWI!! The soldier who rescued him made 26 films and a radio show for the beloved dog.
This breed is so smart, they can learn new tricks in just a few repetitions! Another fun fact is that the breed has a name change after the world wars as Europeans and Americans were deterred by anything 'German', so they changed their name to 'Alsatian Wolf Dog'. Some still refer to them by that name today.
