The History of the Cockapoo
The Cockapoo is the original designer dog! They were first created in the United States in the 1960s.
People were impressed by their sweet, intelligent nature along with their odourless and low-shed coats. Breeders began intentionally crossing poodles with cocker spaniels to recreate these traits in the cockapoo.
Over the decades this crossbreed has gained popularity all over the world, making excellent companion pets and family dogs.
What do Cockapoos look like?
The appearance of cockapoos is difficult to predict as with any mixed-breed dog. Their size and weight depend mainly on the type of poodle used to breed the cockapoo.
If a toy poodle is used the cockapoo can weigh as little as 5 pounds, but the offspring of a standard poodle can weigh up to 65 pounds! Most commonly cockapoos are created from crossing a cocker spaniel with a miniature poodle, creating a medium-sized dog.
The appearance of their coat is also difficult to predict and control. It comes down to which parent’s genes are more dominant. The coat may be straight, wavy or curly. It may be long, medium or short. The colour of their coat also varies widely!
They can be any colour that you could see in a poodle or cocker spaniel, including black, white, red, brown, sable, tan or blonde.
Cockapoos typically inherit the low shedding quality of a poodle and generally don’t need to be washed as often which is why so many people choose this breed.
What are the personality and traits of a Cockapoo?
People adore the personality of cockapoos which is why they have been such a hit since their inception. Cockapoos are bred more for their temperament than for their appearance. They tend to inherit the sweet and loving nature which is common with both of their parents.
Cockapoos are highly intelligent, enthusiastic and easy to train, making them the perfect pet for a family.
They are friendly and affectionate comedians with a sweet temperament and a zest for life. If they are well socialised they should be happy and friendly dogs all of the time.
Cockapoos thrive on social interaction and hate to be left alone. They get along well with other pets and they love children!
