The History of the Border Collie

The Border Collie breed originated in the UK where they were used to help guard and herd sheep. In England and Scotland, they became known as the most valuable animal to have for a shepherd. Border Collies were specifically bred to make amazing working dogs.

The breed varied between regions and became associated with their particular regions. They were known as Welsh Sheepdogs, Northern Sheepdogs and Scotch Collies. The Border Collies name reflects his Scottish heritage. The word collie refers to sheepdogs in the Scottish dialect.

In 1860, this breed was shown at the second dog show ever in England and have been one of the best breeds to compete in dog shows and competitions since with its intelligence, trainability and agility.

Today the Border Collie is still regarding as one of the best sheepherding dogs you can have. This breed belongs in the country!

What do Border Collies look like?

The Border Collie, a medium-sized dog that looks like a lightweight version of the Australian Shepherd. Border Collies have fluffy feathered tails.

The Border Collie has two different types of coats, rough or smooth. The rough coats are medium in length with beautiful feathering on the legs, chest and belly. The smooth coats are short all over, coarse in texture and have minimal feathering.

Their coats are usually mostly black with their iconic white markings on their face, neck, feet, legs and tail. Borders Collies do have different coloured coats as well such, they may have two colours, three colours, merle or one solid colour. 

What are the personality and traits of a Border Collie?

The Border Collie is a dynamo is a dog! Intelligent, tenacious, energetic, alert and hardworking. These dogs learn so quickly that it can be difficult to keep them challenged! You also need to be prepared for them to outsmart you.

They have a seemingly supernatural amount of energy and stamina. This trait was developed as they were required to work all day as working dogs in the hills and valleys of Scotland and England, running 50 miles a day or more. This breed is certainly the ultimate working dog.

They are also highly sensitive and intuitive. They have a piercing gaze which they use to herd sheep and basically any other animal. They have an overwhelming urge to gather a flock, this could be sheep, children, cats, squirrels and even cars! This instinct cannot be trained out of them, it comes as part of the border collie package!

They thrive on mental and physical stimulation and must have a positive way to direct their immense amount of energy. This breed is not a cuddly dog who likes to nap the day away, they are workaholics! They need to be busy and love to have a job or something to work on or train towards. This could be herding sheep, competing in dog sports or playing a vigorous round of fetch.

Border Collies will respond to even the most subtle command and even be able to predict what you are going to do before you even do.

They make wonderful companion dogs if you can keep up! They are best suited to active families who live out of the city and especially those who want to be involved in dog sports. Their intelligence makes them easy to train and excellent pets as long as they have the mental and physical stimulation that they need.

The Border Collie breed excels in any activity he tries, including sheepdog trials, agility, flyball, flying disc, advanced obedience, freestyle obedience, or tracking.
