The History of The Yorkshire Terrier

The story of the Yorkie goes all the way back to the Industrial Revolution in England. The origins of the breed are slightly uncertain with a few theories of how the Yorkie came to be. One theory is Scottish workers came to Yorkshire to work in the coal mines, textile mills and other factories. They brought with them a dog known as a Clydesdale Terrier who they then developed into the Yorkshire Terrier from a number of different terrier breeds.

Another theory is that the breed was bred by men in Northern England who couldn’t keep large dogs. It’s believed that these dogs were originally used primarily to catch rats in the factories. The original Yorkie was much larger than the Yorkie of today. They were miniaturised through selective breeding and became a dog that was fashionable to won.

In 1855 a dog called Huddersfield Ben became a popular show dog and is considered to be the father of the modern Yorkie. The breed acquired the name in 1870 because Yorkshire is where this breed was predominately developed.

The earliest record of a Yorkshire Terrier being born in the US was in 1872. They were able to compete in shows by 1878. While they have roots as posh show dogs, they are now a firm favourite family pet who is devoted to their owners.

What do Yorkshire Terriers look like?

Yorkshire Terriers are tiny and cute with their button faces and glamourous long silky coat. They are one of the smallest breeds of dog and only stand six or seven inches tall and weigh between two and seven pounds.

Their head is small with long fur on top of it which is often tied up with a ribbon by doting owners.

The Yorkie’s coat is long, silky and dead straight. Show dogs have fur that reaches the floor! Puppies are born black but their steel blue and tan coat start gradually developing after one year. Their fur is steel bleu from the back of the head to the tip of the tail. The head is bright gold with tan hairs. They have tan legs as well.

Yorkies tend to become lighter with age as hormonal changes affect their colour.

What are the personality and traits of a YORKSHIRE TERRIER?

Yorkshire Terriers are affectionate towards their owners but true to their terrier heritage they can be suspicious of transfers.

This breed is smart and self-assured. They have an adventurous terrier spirit and can display a range of personalities. Some Yorkies are cute and cuddly and will follow you around all day while others can be more mischievous and outgoing.

Yorkshire Terriers are independent and can have a lot of attitude, however, they have a soft side too. Yorkies love to have all of your attention and can’t be left alone for long. They will learn to pick up on your feelings and need to feel safe and loved to develop a happy and positive personality.

Yorkies can become yappy and bark at almost every sound they hear so it’s important to train them when it’s not appropriate to bark at a young age.

Yorkies have an undying loyalty for their owners and are very confident. In fact, they are hardly aware of their small size and will happily pick a fight with a much larger dog.

Due to their size, delicate structure and spunky terrier personality, they are best suited to houses with older children or no children at all.
