The History of the Golden Retriever

The golden retriever breed was developed in Scotland in the highland estate of Sir Dudley Majoribanks or Lord Tweedmouth. He was aiming to breed a talented retriever as he was a waterfowl hunter. He bred the golden retriever to have an amazing nose who would be attentive to their human hunting companion. He also wanted a dog that was loyal and even-tempered as a family dog.

Tweedmouth bred the beginnings of the Golden retriever breed between 1868 and 1871 and was selectively breeding puppies to be a golden colour and was initially popular for its hunting abilities. The breed resulted from crossing a number of other breeds which include spaniels, setters, and Newfoundland. The combination of breeds resulted in a strong dog who can swim, withstand cold temperatures, track game and hunt birds with talent and skill.

The Kennel Club officially recognised the breed as distinct in 1911 and in 1920 they became officially known as the Golden Retriever.

The golden retriever breed was eventually established and made its way to the homes of many people all around the world. Today, golden retrievers are still amazing bird hunters but they are also loving family pets and popular service dogs with the blind and as search and rescue and contraband detection dogs due to their intelligence, heightened senses and trainability.

What do Golden Retrievers look like?

The golden retriever is the number one iconic family dog. With their beautiful smiling faces, which retain puppy-like features, silky golden coats and floppy ears. This breed is expressive with irresistible puppy dog eyes. They also arguably make the cutest puppies on earth!

Golden retriever males are 23 to 24 inches tall and weigh about 29 to 32 kilograms. Females are about 21 to 22 inches tall and weigh about 25 to 29 kilograms. Their heads a strong and broad with floppy ears that hang just below their jaw.

The golden retriever has a dense, water-repellent coat with a thick undercoat. Some coats are wavy while others are straight and they shed heavily in spring and fall. Their fur beautifully feathers on their neck, legs, thighs, underside and tail, which is one of the most attractive features of this breed. They come in all shades of gold from very light to dark gold.

Golden retrievers have beautiful personality traits that we know and love so much. They are playful, affectionate and even-tempered. While they may appear as cute, dopey and clumsy, they are actually highly intelligent and respond incredibly well to obedience training. They are eager to please and love to work. They are usually slow to mature and retain the silly, playful personality of a puppy into older age, which makes them oh-so lovable. They are family dogs and love to be with their “pack” of humans.
