In the centuries that followed this adorably small squish-faced breed became one of the most popular breeds of dog the world over.
Pugs live to be loved by their humans and are best known for their charming, mischievous and sociable nature. Their range of human-like expressions, thanks to the help of their extra wrinkly foreheads, have delighted humans for hundreds of years. The History of the Pug
The pug originated in China, even though it is usually associated with Holland. It was most likely bred down from a mastiff breed to create the cute little pugs we know and love today.
These small but sturdy dogs were eventually transported to Holland via trading ships of the Dutch East India Company. Funnily enough, in 1572, a pug alerted Prince William from approaching Spanish soldiers, which in turn saved his life. From then on out the breed was tied to the royal House of Orange.
Many royals have had pugs as their doggie companions, making them incredibly popular the world over.
In more recent times the breed has been surging in popularity thanks to movies such as Men in Black and their outrageously cute and funny wrinkled faces, which have made them internet stars!
What do Pugs look like?
Pugs have a unique and unmistakable appearance, with their large round, wrinkled heads, shorted muzzles, bulgy eyes, expressions and curly tails. The vertical wrinkle on the forehead is said to resemble the Chinese character for “Prince” and so in known as the “Prince Mark”.
Their coats are short but dense and come in a variety of colours, from apricot to fawn, silver and black. All of the lighter coloured have darkening of the fur around their ears and face, which gives them their iconic and ever so cute markings.
What are the personality and traits of a Pug?
Pugs are most famously known for being mischievous, charming and sociable. They make excellent companion dogs and suit living with all sorts of families, as long as the climate is mild.
They are not as energetic and lively as many of the other toy dog breeds, they enjoy relaxing and snoozing the afternoon away by your side. Pugs can at times be stubborn but are fairly easy to train and most of the time want to please their humans.
These laid back pups don’t tend to bark, dig or chew too much, making them perfect inside dogs. Their sturdy frame means they can get along great with children and other dogs. These charming wee things adore their humans and love to cuddle up and be affectionate.
